About 108,000 robots were produced in Japan in 2005, with a total value of 656.5 billion yen. While industrial robots currently form the bulk of this robot market, by the year 2010, the size of Japan's domestic robot market is expected to reach about 2 trillion yen and expand into fields such as public security, medicine and welfare. Further applications into everyday life and education are expected in the years ahead. Surely, Japan, with its state-of-the-art next-generation robotics technology ("RT"), will appeal to foreign RT-related companies as a very promising market.
The Kansai region has a high concentration of home electronics manufacturer headquarters such as Panasonic and Sharp, while Osaka has a high concentration of SMEs specializing in a wide variety of technologies. In collaboration with such businesses, research institutes, and universities, Osaka is thriving to become the capital of the robotics world.
